Emerging pollutants can be defined as pollutants currently not included in routine monitoring programmes at Union level but which could pose a significant risk requiring regulation, depending upon their potential ecotoxico logical and toxicological effects and on their levels in the aquatic environment. Emerging contaminants are chemical compounds or materials that are newly detected in bodies of water and soil, with the potential to negatively impact the environment. In this section have been categorized and summarized the effectiveness of each system in treating emerging pollutants. As the number of pollutants of emerging concern is high, they have been categorized in the following families for the D4RUNOFF project: (a) Pesticides an their transformation products; (b) Personal care Products; (c) Tyre compounds; (d) Industrial chemical; (e) Pharmaceutical; (f) Fossil fuel and combustion products; and, (g) Microplastics.
